Overwatch Summer Games 2017: New skins include Mercy, Junkrat, Widowmaker, and more

The 2017 Summer Games sprinkle traditional sports in with beach fun.

These skins are less Olympian, more pool side fun.
Ooh la la!
Blizzard Entertainment

The Summer Games are going live today, and they’re bringing a new and improved Lucioball with them. Not only are we seeing a new form of Lucioball, with a ranked ladder and new maps, but we’re getting new cosmetics. This time, instead of exclusively Olympian athletes, the theme is significantly more summery. Say hello to the latest skins to enter Overwatch, and we won’t judge you if you start wondering how much you can spend on loot boxes without destroying your finances. We’ve rounded up each new skin here.

By the way, when you look at Sombra and Soldier 76’s new weapons, you may recognize them from a previous developer video. Pretty sneaky, Blizzard!

Biker Reaper

Reaper, buddy, you missed out on the theme...
BMX Reaper is here and ready to roll.
Blizzard Entertainment

In the 2016 Summer Games, one of the sprays featured Reaper doing a sick trick on a bicycle. That spray became a stealth hit, with fans drawing fanart of BMX Reaper and writing elaborate headcanons where BMX Reaper gunned down golfing Jack Morrison. The fan dedication to this spray has been recognized, because now Reaper has an official pro biker set up going for him. It’s good to have hobbies, even if you’re an undead wraithman running the world’s biggest terrorist organization.

Tulum Sombra

Sombra online, and ready to relax on the beach.
Blizzard Entertainment

Sombra’s always been the most elusive Overwatch character, but that doesn’t mean she can’t turn up for a little fun in the sun. Sombra’s always there to dive for the truth, and when summer rolls around, she takes that a little more literally by suiting up in scuba gear. This version of Sombra is absolutely adorable, even if I’m not 100% sure how she gets into the water without frying her augments.

Côte d'Azur Widowmaker

My skin is clear, my crops are flourishing, my MMR is rising...
Widowmaker is the most fashionable sniper on the beach.
Blizzard Entertainment

Widowmaker recently scored her Talon skin during the Uprising event, but some fans were hoping for something a little more casual. This beach themed attire is absolutely perfect, even if her stylish shades may not give the same vision as her usual headgear. We suspect this may end being one of the most popular skins in the game. Who doesn’t love a perfectly coiffed haircut with some killer fashion? Presumably, these people exist, but I don’t care to learn any more about them.

Winged Victory Mercy

Why be a medic when you can be a goddess?
Mercy’s latest skin casts her in an elegant light.
Blizzard Entertainment

Mercy’s skin was teased by Jeff Kaplan in his latest developer update, and he mentioned it was his favorite Mercy skin yet. We can see why: she’s absolutely stunning decked out in this Grecian garb. It seems like your team always needs a Mercy these days, so at least you can look incredible while you’re pocket healing and waiting for the perfect rez.

Grillmaster: 76

Jack Morrison is... capable of having fun?!
I’ve got you in my sights... for some relaxing beach fun.
Blizzard Entertainment

Soldier 76 is usually focused on killing, but today he’s all about grilling. His pulse rifle is there to light up the barbeque (if you check out the Helix rockets, it’s an a salt rifle), and he’s got an assortment of grilling tools. Even his tactical visor has been swapped out with some classy summer shades. I’m going to be honest: I wasn’t aware that Jack Morrison was genetically capable of having fun, and now that I know he can show up to the beach in cargo shorts and a floral shirt, I’m slightly alarmed.

Lifeguard McCree

If you can’t find a cowboy hat, a straw hat will do just fine.
The Peacekeeper has received a tropical makeover.
Blizzard Entertainment

McCree has traded in his poncho for a towel, his Peacekeeper for a flare gun, and his BAMF belt buckle for a SAMF, which presumably states his dedication to summer. We also get to see that McCree is shredded, which suggests he’s been working hard for the perfect beach bod. We salute you in this goal, McCree.

Cricket Junkrat

Junkrat’s suited up and ready to play.
Don’t try to get anything past THIS guy.
Blizzard Entertainment

Junkrat receives a legendary sports themed skin of his own, proudly representing Australia in the competitive cricket circuit. It’s nice to see Junkrat show a little patriotism, and maybe getting some time in on the field will settle down those violent urges of his. We can only hope he doesn’t turn to violence when the opponent scores a goal.

This batch of Summer Games skins are sure to start a loot box rush. Remember that Blizzard recently made changes to the loot box algorithms, so you should be getting more credits instead of duplicates. We wish you luck in getting the skins you want, and maybe even need.
