The first season of the Overwatch League has almost come to an end, but before it does, we still have one series left: the Finals. In a matchup few could have possibly seen coming, the first ever Overwatch League Finals will be played between the Philadelphia Fusion and the London Spitfire.
Heading into the playoffs, these two sides were the lowest to even qualify for postseason play. But, after two grueling series each, against some of the league’s best teams, both the Spitfire and the Fusion have proven that they more than deserve their place in the spotlight.
While it has been a while, this isn’t the first time that these two teams will face off against one another on a big stage. Back in playoffs of Stage 2 the first match up was the Fusion up against the Spitfire. The Spitfire were Stage 1’s champions, while the Fusion barely managed to sneak into playoffs with a little bit of luck, so all signs pointed to the Spitfire advancing to the Finals. However, in a tense five map series, the Fusion barely managed to come out on top, clinching their victory in a tense Route 66 map.
A lot has changed for these two teams since that playoff match, and it’s fair to say that both teams will enter this match with close to an even chance of winning. Much like the rest of the playoffs, the Finals will be a three-match series, with each match consisting of a five-match series, the first team to win two matches will be crowned Overwatch’s first league champion.
All of the action from the Overwatch League Finals kicks off on Friday, July 27 at 7 p.m. ET live from the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York. As always, the matches can be seen on the Overwatch League Twitch channel, while Friday’s will also be broadcast on ESPN.
