Hot off the heels of a successful first season that culminated in a Grand Finals at the Barclays Center in New York, Blizzard has announced that the Overwatch League will be expanding and adding two new teams ahead of the 2019 season.
One of the new franchises to be joining the league will be based out of Atlanta, Georgia, providing the league with another team in the southern United States. The team is owned by Cox Enterprises and Province Inc. who have partnered to form the Atlanta Esports Ventures. Atlanta is already a bustling city for esports as the home of Turner’s ELEAGUE studios where the company frequently hosts tournaments and competitions for both fighting games as well as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
The other new team joining the league as a part of next year’s expansion will come from Guangzhou, China. Owned by the Nenking Group, a financial and entertainment conglomerate, this team will help expand the Overwatch League’s global brand to another city outside of the United States. This is the Overwatch League’s second team in China after the Shanghai Dragons who were one of the league’s founding teams.
Further details about these teams, such as rosters, team colors, official names and logos will be announced at a later time.
